Chia Porridge Power
What are Chia seeds?
Chia seeds originate from South America and have been getting a lot of attention over the last few years for their superfood qualities. We love these tiny seeds because they’re packed full of fibre, protein, omega 3 fatty acids AND essential minerals. Move aside Captain Oats there’s a new porridge in town!
How to make Chia Porridge:
You will need; A glass jar/ container, a pan, a sieve, a wooden spoon, a knife and a chopping board.
I like to prep my dry porridge so it’s ready for to make either the warming chia porridge below or these overnight oats for mornings on the go, 4-5tbsp of this mixture and additional toppings below easily sees me through until lunch!
There is no exact science in my dry mixes, and I often find myself throwing in whatever is left kicking around my cupboards, however, the picture above is 1/5 oatbran, 1/5 chia, 1/5 hulled hemp seeds, 1/5 (or maybe a bit less) desiccated coconut, 1/5 sunflower seeds.
Ingredients (individual portions):
3tbsp of Chia Seeds
2tbsp of Organic Porridge Oats/ Oat Bran
1tbsp hulled hemp hearts (optional for an added protein boost!)
1 tbsp of sunflower/ pumpkin seeds
400ml of low sugar plant-based milk like coconut/ almond.
1tsp of cinnamon
Optional Toppings:
Mixed nuts and seeds (my favourites are pecans/ almonds or flaxseeds) OR
Diced Apple or fruit of your choice and 1tbsp of Almond Butter OR
Grated carrot, ginger and applesauce OR
tsp of honey OR
for post-workout breakfasts 1 scoop of Form Nutrition protein.
Method
*Optional for better digestion*: The night before place all your ingredients in the saucepan and leave soak overnight.
Step 1: Bring the seeds, oats and water/milk to a low simmer, stirring regularly to avoid sticking.
Step 2: Add the cinnamon and toppings of your choice and simmer for a further 3-5 minutes, adding more milk if needed.
Step 3: Pour your porridge into a bowl and enjoy every mouthful knowing you’re supercharging your body and mind!
